On 8th of November 1995, Constable Keppler was participating in a 4km timed run with his fellow recruits at the Police Academy, but began to struggle towards the end of the run and his colleagues went back to support him.

Having just completed the run, Constable Keppler collapsed and was unable to be resuscitated and passed away at the scene. 

Constable Keppler joined the Western Australia Police Force on the 28th of August 1995, as part of Recruit Squad 10/95, but during his training he contracted Glandular Fever, and transferred to the following Recruit Squad 11/95.
