Noel ILES

Reg. No.2901

Rank: Constable

Date of Death:

Cause of Death: Murdered

Details:

On the afternoon on 9th of February 1963, Constable Isles was working at Belmont Police Station, when he attended a disturbance at a house in Epsom Avenue, Belmont on his way home from duty.

As Constable Isles walked to the front door of the house, he was shot in the face with a shotgun fired from the window by Brian William Robinson. Constable Isles fell to his knees and Robinson ran from the house, pushed Constable Isles over with his foot and shot him in the head, killing him instantly.

Robinson tried to commandeer a nearby car, but when the passenger, Andrew McDougall, refused to get out, he was also shot dead. Robinson took a taxi driver hostage and forced him to drive to Gnangara Pine Plantation.

A large manhunt took place, which involved every available police officer and many members of the public. Robinson was captured the following day within the Gnangara Pine Plantation and later convicted of murder and hanged.

Constable Isles was given a Police funeral with full honours.

Constable Isles left his wife Shirley and four children.
