On the 18th of August 1951, Constable Stewart was a passenger in a police vehicle, when alighting from the vehicle, he missed his footing and struck his head on the road. He was rushed unconscious to Kalgoorlie District Hospital with a possible fracture of the skull, but never regained consciousness

On 21st of August 1951, Constable Stewart passed away due to his injuries.

Constable Stewart joined the Police Force as a cadet at the age of 16.
