On the 16th of March 1977, 1st Class Constable Smith was killed in a traffic crash on Marmion Avenue, Padbury.

1st Class Constable Smith was traveling north when his car crossed the dividing line whilst driving on a bend, crashing head on into a truck travelling in the opposite direction. 

Constable Smith died instantly at the scene.
