On Friday 26th of January 2001, Senior Constable Ruland was a passenger in Police aircraft POLAIR 64, when it crashed on the approach to Newman Airport.

The aircraft was returning from a call earlier that day to a reported assault in Kiwirrikurra, near the Northern Territory border.

Senior Constable Ruland was given a Police funeral with full honours.
