Date of Death:
Cause of Death: Murdered
Details:
On the 6th of March of 1928, Edward Kelly was drinking in the Brisbane Hotel, Highgate, when he was refused service and evicted, he left threatening to return with a gun.
The barman sent word to Sergeant Mark, the Officer in Charge, Highgate Police Station, who was off duty at the time, but still made his way to the hotel to await Kelly's return.
Meanwhile Kelly had purchased a loaded revolver in Perth and, after a wild shooting spree in the city, travelled by taxi back to the hotel.
Kelly entered the hotel, fired at the barman and missed. The unarmed Sergeant Mark and Mr John Tovey confronted Kelly, when Sergeant Mark was shot at point blank range. However, Sergeant Mark still managed to tackle Kelly and brought him to the floor where patrons held him.
Sergeant Mark was taken to hospital but died of his wounds two days later.
Kelly was given the death penalty, but later commuted to life imprisonment and committed to an asylum.
Sergeant Mark was given a Police funeral with full honours.
