On 27th of February 1996 at about 7.34am, 1st Class Constable Gaunt was involved in a traffic crash.

1st Class Constable Gaunt was riding his Police motorcycle under Category C to the scene of a serious traffic crash in Welshpool, when he crashed into a side of a vehicle that began to turn right within the intersection of Jubilee Road and Lewis Road, Forrestfield. 

1st Class Constable Gaunt sustained serious injuries and passed away in hospital on 17 March 1996 from complications caused by his injuries.
