Details:
On the 18th of April 1900, Police Assistants Dong, Coombul and Don were in pursuit of local men who were wanted for killing, and others who had escaped custody.
They located the camp near Leopold Downs but decided on an early morning raid and bedded down two kilometres away from the camp, however, the wanted men became aware of the police camp location and attacked the Police Assistants before dawn on 19th April 1900.
Police Assistant Dong was speared 3 times, once under his right arm, once in his left breast and once in his right thigh, he died soon after the attack.
The two other Police Assistants used up all their ammunition and escaped.
Police Assistant Coombul was speared in the arm and shoulder but survived the attack.
Local men Bullangee, Malonoworra and Chawargo were tried at Supreme Court sessions and were sentenced to death for the murder of Aboriginal Police Assistant Dong.
