On the 18th of December 1957, at about 8pm, Constable Burns was seriously injured as he was patrolling the West Coast Highway, near Scarborough, after his motorcycle struck a large piece of limestone, throwing him from his motorcycle.

Constable Burns died from his injuries in Royal Perth Hospital on 20th December 1957.
